Companies that use labyrinthine subscription cancellation procedures, spotty customer service bots and other cynical schemes used to give customers a run for their money have been put on notice by the Biden administration.

The White House on Monday announced a new government-wide effort called "Time Is Money" this week that aims to crack down on unfriendly business practices that hurt customers, building on past efforts to tackle junk fees that raise the cost of services like tax filing.

"These complications don't just happen by accident," the White House said in a press release. “Companies often deliberately design their business processes to be time-consuming or otherwise burdensome to consumers … all with the goal of maximizing profits.

"Americans should not be subjected to confusing, manipulative or deceptive practices online."
