An X user (formerly Twitter) who goes by the name VivyVCCS ( tweet ) recently discovered a strange bug in Windows 11 that drastically improves File Explorer performance. It shows that the built-in file explorer can perform very fast, like lightning fast, but it is hampered by new changes and resource-hungry frameworks. Here are all the details we know so far.

Speed up File Explorer on Windows 11 (trick)

According to X User, enabling full screen mode in File Explorer by pressing the "F11" key and exiting full screen mode immediately makes File Explorer work much faster. Note that if you're using Insider builds, the navbar may break, suggesting that the performance degradation may be linked to the new XAML-based navbar.

That said, I used the same F11 trick on my stable Windows 11 build, and it didn't break anything. Instead, it improved the performance of File Explorer many times. What a godsend! Did you know that you can speed up the explorer by using bugs? Turns out switching in and out of full screen mode (F11) improves load times noticeably! Wish this was the performance we get out of the box.(Yes the navbar breaks.. but the navbar shouldn't cause such a massive speed regression..) pic.twitter.com/GObybf1C8q — Vivy (@VivyVCCS) September 3, 2023
