Fox X-Men films peaked in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender returned to the film, which also saw the return of Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and the old X-Men team. The film had a compelling theme and the lead duo gave an emotionally powerful performance that fans wanted to see in more films.

Unfortunately, the films that followed in the X-Men universe were less favorable to critics and audiences alike. Hugh Jackman's Logan and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool movies were the saving grace for Fox in this period before the Disney acquisition.
