When you see a dandelion plant on the map, be sure to stop as this is one of the easiest ways to get a black core. To get the core out of the plant, just hit it, and when the seeds start floating, use your ranged attacks or jump and hit it with a black center to get the core.
On the map you will encounter small plants that can give you a core. All you have to do is find the fire slimes around it, grab them and throw them at the plant.
