From today, the UK designates data centers as critical national infrastructure (CNI). As a result, the sector is expected to receive special government support designed to prevent negative economic impacts from IT disruptions such as CrowdStrikes, cyber attacks and extreme weather events.

The special support will come in the form of a dedicated CNI data infrastructure team of "senior government officials" tasked with monitoring the threat landscape and anticipating potential risks. That team will also be responsible for coordinating an emergency, should one be needed.

"Data centers are the engines of modern life, powering the digital economy and keeping our most personal information secure," said technology secretary Peter Kyle.

"Bringing data centers into the critical national infrastructure regime will enable better coordination and collaboration with government against cybercriminals and contingencies."
