A UK data rights campaign group has launched a complaint to the Data Protection Authority against Meta's privacy policy change that allows it to scrape user data to develop AI models.

Meta to use Facebook and Instagram users' data to train AI

The Open Rights Group (ORG), a UK membership organization that campaigns to protect privacy and freedom of expression online, pointed out that Meta emailed Facebook and Instagram users in the UK in late May to warn that they would introduce changes to their privacy policies on 26 June. According to ORG, Meta would "rely on the legal basis known as legitimate interests" to use individuals' information for its AI development.

The complaint follows a similar protest in the EU under the General Data Protection Regulation, which resulted in the social media giant agreeing to pause plans to train AI models on EU users' Facebook and Instagram users' posts.

Although UK data protection law currently mirrors that of the EU, its decision to leave the economic and political bloc took effect at the end of 2020.
