Ping Li, 59, is a US citizen living in Wesley Chapel, Florida, having worked for a "major US telecommunications company and an international IT company" since moving to the state.
The indictment contains multiple allegations that Li worked as an agent for China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) and allegedly passed on information related to a variety of matters in the United States, from China-linked cyber attacks to banned religious movements.
"The MSS often uses 'cooperative contacts' in countries outside of China to further its intelligence objectives, which include obtaining information about foreign corporate or industrial affairs, foreign politicians or intelligence officials, and information about China's political dissidents residing in those countries," the Justice Department said ( DoJ) and announced the charges.
