The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it is seeking to establish a water sector cybersecurity task force to augment current efforts to implement "immediate" solutions to prevent disruptions to one of America's most critical services.

Widespread vulnerabilities common across the sector will be considered by the task force, as will approaches to adopting industry-wide best practices. It also plans to build on existing initiatives, such as the 2023 roadmap to a secure and resilient water and sanitation sector.

Recommendations coming out of a March 21 meeting between state environment, health and homeland security secretaries will also be fed back and considered by the task force to be established. The concerned secretaries of state were invited via a letter sent to them by Michael Regan, EPA administrator, and Jake Sullivan, national security adviser, outlining the cyber threat to the industry.
