Have you ever suspected that an airline used your data to boost sales, overcharge, target you with ads, or sell it to third parties? Worried about how secure their system is when you enter that passport number? The US Department of Transportation looks at it with a review of the nation's ten largest airlines.

The investigation will look at airlines' policies and procedures to determine whether they are protecting personal information properly, unfairly or fraudulently monetizing it, or sharing it with third parties, the agency said yesterday. If they really do something "problematic," they can look forward to scrutiny, fines and new rules, the DOT says.

"Airline passengers should have confidence that their personal information will not be improperly shared with third parties or abused by employees," said US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

"This review of airline practices is the beginning of a new initiative by the DOT to ensure that airlines are good stewards of sensitive passenger data."
