With Nathan, Madeline attempted to ignore her anxieties, and that decision only hurt her. With Ed, she was subconsciously trying to blow up the relationship before it could blow up on her.

The dynamic of Jane’s rape is different. Prior to the rape, “Saxon Banks” verbally denigrates Jane in the book, calling her fat and ugly and leaving her so horror-struck that she doesn’t resist.

In Season 1, Jane moves to Monterey to have a fresh start, with her son Ziggy. They fly under the radar for their first few weeks in town, but once Madeline meets Jane- she starts to invite her out with the girls so she can meet other moms. Jane obliges and seems content to make a few friends in the town.

Perry doesn’t recognize Jane at all in the book.

What makes this particular reunion a tad bit suspicious is that — spoiler alert — the finale revealed that Ziggy and Celeste’s twins, Max and Josh, were half-brothers.

In the final moments of Big Little Lies season one, we finally discovered who had died and how it had happened. The victim was Perry (Alexander Skarsgård), Celeste’s (Nicole Kidman) husband.

After Jane coaxes him to point out the perpetrator in a school picture, we learn that the kid who really hurt Amabella was Max, one of Celeste’s twins.

Celeste, acting as her own lawyer, was stoic, bringing Mary Louise to heel by invoking Perry’s brother, Raymond, who died in a car accident after Mary Louise lost her temper; according to Perry, Celeste says, Mary Louise blamed him for his brother’s death, emotionally and physically abusing him.

Well, season two of Big Little Lies is moving right along. If you expected Perry’s abusive tendencies to stay secret for longer then you’d be surprised by Mary Louise finding out tonight about his violent inclinations. Of course, she doesn’t believe it, but now the truth is out there.

The promised face-off between Meryl Streep’s Mary Louise and Nicole Kidman’s Celeste in the Big Little Lies season two finale was just as explosive as promised, with Celeste throwing her mother-in-law off guard by bringing up the car accident that killed Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgard) brother when they were children.
