The Acolyte was intended to be a gateway for new fans to the Star Wars universe while catering to small to longtime fans of the franchise. The show drew heavily from the EU while telling a brand new story that would have required no prior knowledge of the Star Wars universe. But the show failed miserably, not only failing to bring new fans through the gate but also alienating old fans, as it was expected to do.

However, Star Wars isn't the first IP to make some changes that didn't sit well with fans. Avatar: The Last Airbender's sequel series, The Legend of Korra, also worked on a story that was allegedly "Woke Up", but the attitude that Byran Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino had was reflected in the story they ended up telling: one that perhaps stumbled a bit, but stayed true to what IP is all about.

Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino set out to create Legend of Korra for a slightly more mature audience and aged the main cast of the story. But the creators of the show never felt like segmenting their viewers into categories and set out to create a story that feels like a natural extension of the first series, but also invites new viewers. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Michael Dante DiMartino said:
