Joker: Folie à Deux will do something that Christopher Nolan would never have done with his iteration of the Joker in The Dark Knight. Director Todd Phillips spoke to Empire Magazine about how he has chosen to approach his version of The Joker.

While the Joker in Nolan's The Dark Knight leaned heavily into his criminal mastermind, something Todd Phillips revealed he would be against doing with Arthur Fleck. This Joker had taken a different path and represented something different to the people of Gotham instead of a criminal psychopath.

The Arthur Fleck that audiences met in Phillips' Joker was not a mobster or a criminal of any kind. He killed a few people, but that wasn't the core of his personality, as is the case with some other versions of the character. Speaking to Empire, Todd Phillips said:
