Jason Segel starred as Nick Andopolis in Paul Reig's short drama Freaks and Geeks. NBC canceled the series after airing 12 of its 18 episodes, citing low ratings. The series went on to achieve cult status as one of the greatest TV shows of all time. Segel revealed in an interview that he knew the series would be canceled at a certain point during filming.

Judd Apatow served as executive producer on the series and did not take the cancellation of the series very well. He went on to cast actors in several of his projects, notably Segel and Seth Rogen, until they became household names in the industry.

Paul Reig's teenage comedy-drama, Freaks and Geeks, was set in a suburban Detroit high school. Lindsay and Sam Weir, played by Linda Cardellini and John Francis Daley, are siblings who join the "freaks" and "nerds" respectively. Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jason Segel and Busy Philipps played the freaks while Samm Levine and Martin Starr were the nerds.
