Warriors could be as young as 11 years old. Various basic physical tests were required to join the Viking forces, but these tests were considered easy to pass.

Tips to win Tug of War

1. Put the strongest person in the back so that he can use his strength the most and will have the least chance of slipping.

Far from being the unkept warriors traditionally portrayed by literature, Vikings took great pride in their appearance and Viking tweezers and razors have also been excavated.

Vikings were far from the only ones to plunder and they did not do it to kill innocent people or sate some sort of bloodlust. They raided and plundered to gain a higher social status, to gain silver to buy food for their families and to capture slaves to work the fields instead of their wives and children.

Originally a Norse greeting, “heil og sæl” had the form “heill ok sæll” when addressed to a man and “heil ok sæl” when addressed to a woman. Other versions were “ver heill ok sæll” (lit. be healthy and happy) and simply “heill” (lit. healthy).

What did Vikings call each other? They became known as the “Norsemen” (literally, north-men) and laterally as the “Vikings”. They called themselves “Ostmen”.

Tall, blonde, burly, with long beards and a bit dishevelled from their hard life as warriors. On television Viking style includes hair adorned with braids and beads, eyes covered in warrior’s kohl, and faces marked by battle scars.

The average Viking was 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) shorter than we are today. The skeletons that the archaeologists have found, reveals, that a man was around 172 cm tall (5.6 ft), and a woman had an average height of 158 cm (5,1 ft).
