Assonance, or “vowel rhyme,” is the repetition of vowel sounds across a line of text or poetry. For example, “I’m reminded to line the lid of my eye” contains many long “I” sounds, some at the start of words, some in the middle and some containing the word entirely.

The repetition of vowel sounds without repeating consonants; sometimes called vowel rhyme.

Assonance is defined as the act of repeating a vowel sound in a phrase or sentence, often in poetry. An example of assonance in a sentence would be the repeated use of the /oo/ sound in the sentence, “True, I do like Sue.”

Classifying Rhymes by Their Placement Within Lines End rhyme is any rhyme that occurs at the end of a line of verse, in the final word or syllables. Repeated phrases are groups of two, three, or four identical words used too close together, regardless of whether they have the same meaning. For example: He stood and began pacing the length of the office.

The term anaphora refers to a poetic technique in which successive phrases or lines begin with the same words, often resembling a litany. The repetition can be as simple as a single word or as long as an entire phrase.

What are onomatopoeia poems? They are poems that make use of onomatopoeia, those words that sound like what they describe…for example: bang, boom, crash, tinkle, crinkle, pop, crack, sizzle, and so many more. These words paint both a visual and a sound picture for the reader.

Common Examples of Onomatopoeia

• Machine noises—honk, beep, vroom, clang, zap, boing.
• Animal names—cuckoo, whip-poor-will, whooping crane, chickadee.
• Impact sounds—boom, crash, whack, thump, bang.
• Sounds of the voice—shush, giggle, growl, whine, murmur, blurt, whisper, hiss.

Onomatopoeia are words that sound like the action they are describing. They include words like achoo, bang, boom, clap, fizz, pow, splat, tick-tock and zap.

The “tlottlot!” of the horse’s hooves and “clatter”, “clash” and “whistle” are examples of onomatopoeia. This poem is also full of figurative language. The poem starts off with three metaphors in a row: “The wind was a torrent of darkness”, “The moon was a ghostly galleon” and “The road was a ribbon of moonlight”.

Betrayed to the authorities by Tim, a jealous ostler, the highwayman escapes ambush when Bess sacrifices her life to warn him. Learning of her death, he is killed in a futile attempt at revenge (“so they shot him down on the highway, like a dog upon the highway”).

How is the soldiers’ behavior ironic? Something ironic about the behaviour of the solider’s was how they were acting very sexual and inappropriate towards Bess which would be the opposite everyone thinks a soldier should act which is law abiding and professional.

The image of the pale white moon lighting up the scene underlines key moments in the plot. This is a big line, full of the sadness of Bess’ death.

Line 2. The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas, The next big metaphor compares the moon to a “ghostly galleon.” A galleon is a big old ship, the kind that would have carried Spanish gold across the seas. So the moon is like a ship sailing through the sky.

The highwayman goes back to the inn the next day after hearing what happened to Bess. He’s terribly angry and feels as though he should take revenge. He rides and curses the sky. The highwayman also has his sword at the ready, prepared to kill the red coats her caused her death.

Many stagecoaches carried armed guards and some passengers carried pistols. There were also large rewards for anyone who could capture a highwayman and bring him to justice. Most highwaymen were eventually caught and hanged. Afterward, their body was sometimes hanged on a frame called a gibbet as a warning to others.
