The Progressive Character of Macbeth

• His Bravery. The wounded sergeant bears ample testimony to his heroism when fighting against Macdonwald and Sweno.

• His Ambition.
• His Treachery.
• His Tyranny.
• His Imaginativeness.
• Both are aspiring and ambitious.
• Both are murderers, usurpers, tyrants.

These three attributes—bravery, ambition, and self-doubt—struggle for mastery of Macbeth throughout the play. Shakespeare uses Macbeth to show the terrible effects that ambition and guilt can have on a man who lacks strength of character.

The most influential person in the play, by far, is Macbeth. I guess the obvious answer would be Macbeth himself. He is the one who does all the most important things in the play (or, at times, orders others to do them). I suppose you could also say that either the witches or Lady Macbeth are the most influential.

Banquo: The father of Fleance and a general in the army. Macduff: A Scottish nobleman. Ross: A Scottish nobleman. Menteith: A Scottish nobleman.

Siward. The Earl of Northumberland, general of the English forces and brother of the late King Duncan. He leads an army of ten thousand men to oppose Macbeth.

Ross seeks out Macduff to report that Macbeth has killed Lady Macduff and their children. Macduff swears revenge, and, with Malcolm, plans Macbeth’s downfall. A doctor and gentlewoman look on as Lady Macbeth, walking in her sleep, tries desperately to wash the memory of blood from her hands.

Shakespeare’s Macbeths have no children. For example, in Act IV. Scene 3.

Lady Gruoch, step-mother of Lady Gruoch (Lady MacBeth) mustered her army to Kill King Gillacomgen of Moray after he had killed King Boede, the father of Lady MacBeth after Boede made his wife the heiress to his estate. Gruoch (LMB) was pregnant at the time of her husband’s murder.

King Duncan resembled her father as he lay sleeping. At least Lady Macbeth has some type of respect for her own father, but had King Duncan not resembled her father, she would have done the deed herself. Clearly, she has murderous thoughts in her heart and head. In the end, she convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan.

Lady Macbeth is ambitious, manipulative, cruel and unstable. There is not much about her physical appearance. She is described simply as Macbeth’s wife, but her words speak volumes about her personality. We can deduce that Lady Macbeth is a very feminine looking, beautiful woman but she behaves very harshly.

Lady Macbeth is even more ambitious and ruthless than her husband. As soon as an opportunity to gain power presents itself, she has a plan in mind. She uses her influence to persuade Macbeth that they are taking the right course of action and even takes part in the crime herself.

Lady Macbeth is very faithful to her husband and shares in his ambitions. It is she who suggests to Macbeth that they should kill Duncan in order to make the witches’ prophecy come true. She seems to be stronger willed than Macbeth, helping him to recover from his fear after he kills Duncan.

Power of the sexuality. Lady Macbeth also symbolizes the power of the sexuality of women. She uses her charm as a woman to get her husband to do whatever she wants. Lastly, through her evil deeds, Lady Macbeth is a symbol of death, destruction, disorder, manipulation, unchecked ambition and cruelty.

Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as possessing power through her matriarchal relationship with Macbeth. Shakespeare shows how Lady Macbeth is a powerful woman through her ability to retain control of her emotions/sanity for longer than Macbeth, as evidenced through her taking control in the banquet scene.

Lady Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most famous and frightening female characters. When we first see her, she is already plotting Duncan’s murder, and she is stronger, more ruthless, and more ambitious than her husband.

Overall, Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as an evil character initially due to her evil thoughts and desires. However, he presents her sympathetically later in the play, evoking feelings of pity and sadness at her demise.

Lady Macbeth is characterized as possessing ruthless ambition, much like her husband, and is fully complicit in the murder of Duncan in order to set Macbeth on the throne.

As we continue to read Macbeth, we come upon Lady Macbeth doing very unusual things as she sleep walks and even acknowledges her conscience will never be clean. She continues to characterize herself as a devil figure as she is destroying herself with her bad actions and wicked words.

Macbeth himself is not a totally evil man. There is much about him that is good and he experiences an on-going struggle with his conscience. Good is shown in many symbols throughout the play. Heroism – Duncan and his men represent right and order.

When Macduff was absent from Macbeth’s inauguration, Macbeth grew suspicious of him and decided to make a strong point by murdering Macduff’s family. The reason for the murder of his wife and children was to clear the bloodline.

He gives Malcolm Macbeth’s head and hails him the new king. In contrast to Macbeth, Macduff is portrayed as good versus Macbeth’s bad. In the end, the good, Macduff, prevails over the evil, Macbeth when Macduff kills Macbeth, ending the tyrant’s reign. Macduff is the hero defeating the antihero, Macbeth.

To start, Macbeth is a true hero, distinguishing himself on the battlefield to protect King and country. He is truly courageous, brave and is rewarded by the king for his efforts. He does not sustain his hero status for very long, in fact, he becomes a villain, a murderer very shortly after this event.
