In Act IV, scene i, Paris explains to Friar Laurence his rush to marry Juliet. He says it’s because she is grieving too much over her cousin Tybalt’s death. Juliet’s father, Paris says, thinks so much grief is unhealthy, and that a wedding—and a companion to be with—will help her to recover her equilibrium.

In Act 4, Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet, Paris is with Friar Lawrence. He speaking to the Friar of his upcoming marriage to Juliet when she herself walks in on them. When Paris leaves he says, “Till then, adieu, and keep this holy kiss” as he kisses Juliet.

3.5: Lord Capulet expects that Juliet will be grateful that he has found her a handsome and eligible husband. Instead, she refuses to marry Paris and can give no clear explanation why.
