A contraction is a combination of two words as one, such as “don’t,” “can’t,” and “isn’t.” The use of contractions is inappropriate in formal legal writing. Replace them with the two-word version of the contraction.

Formal English is used in “serious” texts and situations — for example, in official documents, books, news reports, articles, business letters or official speeches. Informal English is used in everyday conversations and in personal letters.

Formal and informal language serve different purposes. Formal language does not use colloquialisms, contractions or first person pronouns such as ‘I’ or ‘We’. Informal language is more casual and spontaneous. It is used when communicating with friends or family either in writing or in conversation.

A formal summary is also known as a “stand-alone summary” because it provides all the information necessary to act “alone” or in place of the original work. This type of summary is a piece of writing often used when writing a college paper to show an instructor that you have read and understood the reading.
