A winter storm is a weather event where the precipitation is mainly snow, sleet, or freezing rain. Often coupled with strong winds and below-freezing temperatures, winter storms can be dangerous. But how does a winter storm form?

The accumulations of ice are classified according to the impact they have. They are classified as nuisance, disruptive, and crippling. During a nuisance ice storm event, less than ¼ of an inch of ice accumulates. Disruptive ice storms are typically an ice accumulation of ¼ of an inch to ½ of an inch.

A blizzard forms when heavy snow falls and strong winds blow the snow around, making it hard to see. Blizzards are extremely dangerous because people can lose their way in the blinding snow. The strong winds in a blizzard can also cause power outages, and cold temperatures can freeze water pipes.

How to Survive a Winter Storm

1. Seek some form of shelter immediately. Blowing winds can cause the wind chill to reduce your core body temperature to dangerous levels.
2. If you are wet, try to get dry.
3. Deep snow can actually act as an insulation from the wind and cold temperatures.
4. Stay hydrated, but DO NOT eat snow.

Blizzards can kill, cause traffic accidents and bring cities to a halt. These weather conditions result in car accidents and people on foot can get lost. Additionally, these colder temperatures put people at risk of frostbite or hypothermia.

Snow storms are usually caused by rising moist air within an extratropical cyclone (low pressure area. The cyclone forces a relatively warm, moist air mass up and over a cold air mass. If the air near the surface is not sufficiently cold over a deep enough layer, the snow will fall as rain instead.

Some warning signs are: strong winds, bad wind chills, blinding snow, near zero visibility. Also, if snow drifts are piling, and winds are very strong, it will most likely be a blizzard.

Winter storms create a higher risk of car accidents, hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning, and heart attacks from overexertion. Winter storms including blizzards can bring extreme cold, freezing rain, snow, ice and high winds. Last a few hours or several days.

• Moist air needs to rise, over very cold air, making clouds and snow.
