Phrase Marks. A phrase mark, better known as a slur, indicates that a passage of music should be played legato. Legato is an Italian word meaning smooth. Phrase marks play a significant part in musical shape. It is usually placed on the note head side in order to avoid crossing over note stems.

The marking for ties and slurs is identical and often confuses students. The difference is a tie connects two notes of the same pitch (on the same line or space of the staff). A slur applies to two or more different notes and means the two different notes should be played legato.

Duration or form. In common practice phrases are often four bars or measures long culminating in a more or less definite cadence. A phrase will end with a weaker or stronger cadence, depending on whether it is an antecedent phrase or a consequent phrase, the first or second half of a period.

A phrase is two or more words that do not contain the subject-verb pair necessary to form a clause. Phrases can be very short or quite long.

A bar is going to consist of 4 beats or 4 rhythms of music. It’s as simple as counting 1, 2, 3 ,4. For example, if you have a standard pattern of “kick, clap, kick, clap” then that is going to be a bar. Then, every time that pattern repeats itself that would be another bar.

They work at higher levels of court than solicitors and their main role is to act as advocates in legal hearings, which means they stand in court and plead the case on behalf of their clients in front of a judge.

By passing the bar exam, you will become an Esquire, a licensed attorney.

Delaware makes the list as one of the hardest bar exams in part because of the score required to pass. Students must obtain at least a 145 to pass, which is the highest in the nation. Delaware also only offers the exam once per year, giving students who fail a very long wait before they can take it again.

When someone fails the bar exam they need to take it again if they want to be an attorney. In a few States, applicants are limited to the number of times they can take the exam. If they fail the bar exam that many times they can always move to another State. Finally, States have different standards for approval.

Let them know you know how tough the bar exam is. Letting them know that you understand how difficult the test was can help them understand you sympathize with them. What you should NOT do is try to draw comparisons to a test you failed in the past — even if you took the bar exam.

John F. Kennedy Jr., failed the NY bar exam twice before he passed on his third try. Hillary Clinton, the 67th Secretary of State, failed the D.C. bar exam on her first attempt but passed the Arkansas bar.

Luckily, most states allow unlimited attempts to pass the bar exam. There are 21 states that limit bar exam attempts, that range from 2-6 attempts. Some of those states have discretionary limits that allow additional attempts outside of their limit with special permissions.

You can still certainly succeed on the bar exam without completing the MPT portion in time. It happens every single exam!

The bar exam is a standard exam given to all examinees. As with any other test, some individuals will find the exam more difficult than other examinees. In 2020, New York’s bar exam had a 40 percent pass rate. For those taking the exam the first time, 78 percent passed.

How Long Does It Take to Prepare for the Bar Exam? The typical recommendation is that you spend a total of roughly 400 hours studying for the bar exam. If you are studying for the recommended minimum of nine weeks, that means 40 to 50 hours per week.
