The Ten Commandments – Judaism

They are:

• Do not have any other gods.
• Do not make or worship idols.
• Do not disrespect or misuse God’s name.
• Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.
• Honour your mother and father.
• Do not commit murder.
• Do not commit adultery.
• Do not steal.

God declared that the Israelites were his own people and that they must listen to God and obey His laws. These laws were the Ten Commandments which were given to Moses on two stone tablets, and they set out the basic principles that would govern the Israelites lives.

• You shall have no other gods but me.
• You shall not make or worship any idols.
• You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
• You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy.
• Respect your father and mother.
• You must not murder.
• You must not take someone else’s husband or wife.

The name of God used most often in the Hebrew Bible is the Tetragrammaton (YHWH Hebrew: יהוה‎). Jews traditionally do not pronounce it, and instead refer to God as HaShem, literally “the Name”. In prayer the Tetragrammaton is substituted with the pronunciation Adonai, meaning “My Lord”.

For Jewish people YHWH is the most holy name of God, as written in the ancient Hebrew language. The written language showed no vowels, so the pronunciation is not agreed on. However, most academics agree that “Yahweh” is the most accepted way to say it. This is because it is believed to be too holy to be spoken.

Yahshua is a proposed transliteration of the original Hebrew name of Jesus of Nazareth, considered by Christians and Messianic Jews to be the Messiah. The name means Yahweh (Yah) is salvation (Shua). There is nearly universal consensus that Jesus’ original name was Yeshua.

Due to the numerous translations, the Bible has undergone, “Jesus” is the modern term for the Son of God. His original Hebrew name is Yeshua, which is short for yehōshu’a. It can be translated to ‘Joshua,’ according to Dr.

Jesus (IPA: /ˈdʒiːzəs/) is a masculine given name derived from the name IESVS in Classical Latin, Iēsous (Greek: Ἰησοῦς), the Greek form of the Hebrew and Aramaic name Yeshua or Y’shua (Hebrew: ישוע‎). As its roots lie in the name Yeshua/Y’shua, it is etymologically related to another biblical name, Joshua.

What’s the significance of the name “Jesus”? Most dictionaries will translate Jesus’ name (which was apparently more properly translated to Joshua than “Jesus”) to be “God is salvation.” “God is salvation” is a phrase that ascribes a passive quality to God.

In Christianity, Jesus is the Son of God and in many mainstream Christian denominations he is God the Son, the second Person in the Trinity. He is believed to be the Jewish messiah who is prophesied in the Hebrew Bible, which is called the Old Testament in Christianity.

Traditionally, the origin has been ascribed to the sin of the first man, Adam, who disobeyed God in eating the forbidden fruit (of knowledge of good and evil) and, in consequence, transmitted his sin and guilt by heredity to his descendants.
