Types of symmetry

The four main types of this symmetry are translation, rotation, reflection, and glide reflection.

There are three types of symmetry: reflection (bilateral), rotational (radial), and translational symmetry.

• Radial symmetry: The organism looks like a pie. This pie can be cut up into roughly identical pieces.
• Bilateral symmetry: There is an axis; on both sides of the axis the organism looks roughly the same.
• Spherical symmetry: If the organism is cut through its center, the resulting parts look the same.

Because of the circular arrangement of their parts, radially symmetrical animals do not have distinct front or back ends. They may have distinct top and bottom sides. Some examples of these animals are jellyfish, sea urchins, corals, and sea anemones. A bicycle wheel also has radial symmetry.

Nature uses symmetry to make things beautiful. For example, consider the pictures of the butterfly and the leaf . Symmetry is often seen everyday by people of all ages in nature. Symmetry that we see everyday in nature is most often Bilateral Symmetry.

More symmetrical faces are perceived as more attractive in both males and females, although facial symmetry plays a larger role in judgments of attractiveness concerning female faces. Also, studies have shown that nearly symmetrical faces are considered highly attractive as compared to asymmetrical ones.

In geometry, symmetry is defined as a balanced and proportionate similarity that is found in two halves of an object. It means one-half is the mirror image of the other half. The imaginary line or axis along which you can fold a figure to obtain the symmetrical halves is called the line of symmetry.

Something is symmetrical when it is the same on both sides. A shape has symmetry if a central dividing line (a mirror line) can be drawn on it, to show that both sides of the shape are exactly the same.

Some shapes, such as a scalene triangle, have no lines of symmetry – it is not possible to fold the shape about a line so that the two halves fit exactly on top of one another.

The equilateral triangle has three lines of symmetry whereas a scalene triangle does not have any line of symmetry as its all sides are different. J, K, L, N, and P have zero lines of symmetry. M has one line of symmetry, and H, I, and O have 2 lines of symmetry. The Q, R, S are not symmetrical, so they have zero lines of symmetry. The T, U, and V are symmetrical, but they each have only one line of symmetry.

The rotational symmetry of a shape explains that when an object is rotated on its own axis, the shape of the object looks the same. Many geometrical shapes appear to be symmetrical when they are rotated 180 degrees or with some angles, clockwise or anticlockwise.

The alphabets T, U, V, W, X and Y also possess vertical symmetry as the line divides then equally in both the parts. However, the alphabet Z does not possess vertical symmetry. Hence, the alphabets which have vertical lines of symmetry are A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X and Y.

The capital letters A, M, T, U, V, W and Y are vertically symmetrical, the capital letters B, C ,D, E and K are horizontally symmetrical, the capital letters H, I and X are both horizontally and vertically symmetrical, and the letter O is infinitely symmetrical.
