Consequences of Second World War

There were mass civilian casualties, most notably systemic genocide of the Jewish people, and the atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And in the aftermath, WWII’s place in history is clear: with an estimated death toll of 50-85 million people, it remains by far the deadliest armed conflict of all-time.

In 1939, there were about 2 billion people in the world. The best estimates indicate that between 62 and 78 million of them would die due to WWII—more than 3% of the world’s population.

While it is acknowledged that Soviet soldiers contributed the most on the battlefield and endured much higher casualties, American and British air campaigns were also key, as was the supply of arms and equipment by the US under lend-lease.

The large-scale ways in which WWII changed the world are well-known: the Holocaust’s decimation of Jewish people and culture, the use of atomic bombs on Japan, and the wide swath of death and destruction caused by the Axis powers in Europe. But there are also more indirect ways that WWII impacted modern society.

A dogfight is a form of aerial combat between fighter aircraft at short range. Dogfighting first appeared during World War One, but its most famous instance is probably the Battle of Britain during World War Two.

There has been only one dogfight involving a U.S. aircraft in the last 20 years: in 2017, a U.S. Navy pilot shot down a Syrian fighter. The F-14 Tomcats flown by Mr. Cruise’s character have been retired, and his aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise, has been decommissioned.

John Wukovits, an expert on World War II’s Pacific theater, has written a book that documents the last dogfight of the war, after Admiral William F. Halsey ordered Air Group 88, stationed aboard the USS Yorktown, to attack an airfield near Tokyo on the morning of August 15, 1945.
