Operation. A mouse typically controls the motion of a pointer in two dimensions in a graphical user interface (GUI). The mouse turns movements of the hand backward and forward, left and right into equivalent electronic signals that in turn are used to move the pointer.

• To select an item or choose a menu command, point the mouse at it with the pointer and the left mouse button.
• To move an item is called dragging.

The mouse is a hand-held device that transmits your commands to the computer by controlling the movement of the cursor/pointer on the computer screen.

The left button on a mouse is the default button used to click, select, drag to highlight a word and/or object and used as a pointer.

You can use your index finger to click the left button and the middle finger to click the right one. On the bottom of the mouse is a sensor that allows the mouse to know where to move. A wireless mouse may have a compartment to insert a battery, and it may have an on and off button.

The mouse click creates contact with the electrical components in the mouse which sends a signal to your bus indicating that you have data to send. The bus picks this up and sends this notification as an interrupt to the CPU via the motherboard components.

If you have difficulties using a mouse or other pointing device, you can control the mouse pointer using the numeric keypad on your keyboard. This feature is called mouse keys. Open the Activities overview and start typing Accessibility. You will now be able to move the mouse pointer using the keypad.

Ctrl-clicking (pronounced “control clicking”) is easy. To do it, you just press and hold the Ctrl key down while you click the mouse. For example, ctrl-clicking on a list item will select that item in addition to any items that are already selected.

What is Ctrl-F? Also known as Command-F for Mac users (although newer Mac keyboards now include a Control key). Ctrl-F is the shortcut in your browser or operating system that allows you to find words or phrases quickly. You can use it browsing a website, in a Word or Google document, even in a PDF.

Click is a term used to describe the action of pressing a mouse button (usually the left mouse button, if the mouse has two buttons) one or more times.

On some Windows OS’es, Ctrl + Double Click on a folder opens the folder in a new window.

Press the ⊞ Win key in the lower-left side of your computer’s keyboard, or press the Ctrl and Esc keys at the same time. If your mouse is working, just click the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Press the Windows key , type mouse settings, and press Enter . In the Settings window, under Related settings, click the Additional mouse options link. In the Mouse Properties window, click the Buttons tab, if not already selected. On the Buttons tab, adjust the slider for the Double-click speed option, then press OK.

Performing clicks using Mouse Keys

If you want to right-click on a laptop without using the trackpad, you can do it using a keyboard shortcut. Position the cursor and hold down “Shift” and press “F10” to right-click. Some laptops also have a specific key called a “Menu” key that can be used for right-clicking.

Windows has a ClickLock feature that lets you highlight or drag items without continually holding the mouse button down. Go to the Control Panel, then Mouse Properties. Under the Buttons Tab, select Turn on ClickLock. Once the feature is enabled, briefly press down and hold the mouse button for the desired items.
