There are two types of revelation:

Literally, revelation means an uncovering or unveiling. God takes the initiative in making Himself known and continues to reveal more and more of Himself if we desire His company and are curious enough to seek Him (Jeremiah 29:13).

He is eternal and preeminent to all things. He was born into human form through the conception of the Holy Spirit in the Virgin Mary and walked the earth as both fully human and fully God. He lived a sinless life on earth, despite facing temptation, and was sacrificed on a cross for the sins of man.

• General (or indirect) revelation – called ‘general’ or ‘indirect’ because it is available to everyone.
• Special (or direct) revelation – called ‘direct’ because it is revelation directly to an individual or sometimes a group.

The purpose of Special Revelation is to impart the knowledge and understanding of Jesus Christ, salvation and the atonement. Essentially it is knowledge and understanding, “that is requisite to salvation, that is, an explicit knowledge of Christ and his gospel.”

In theology, general revelation, or natural revelation, refers to knowledge about God and spiritual matters, discovered through natural means, such as observation of nature (the physical universe), philosophy, and reasoning.

A religious experience has significance for the person who experiences it. It involves a sense of the holy or numinous . A person may say they had personally ‘seen’, ‘heard’ or ‘felt’ God. The experience cannot be proved, but the individual will be convinced of the reality of what has happened.

Revelation, in religion, the disclosure of divine or sacred reality or purpose to humanity. In the religious view, such disclosure may come through mystical insights, historical events, or spiritual experiences that transform the lives of individuals and groups.

Jesus is God’s ultimate revelation to humankind. “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things and through whom also he made the universe” (Hebrews 1:1-2).

According to the LDS Church, there are two basic types of direct revelation, public and personal. Public revelation refers to the revelation of God’s will to his chosen prophets, seers, and revelators. A person can receive personal revelation from God as would God’s prophet, but the difference lies in its purpose.
