Plants have three types of root systems: 1.) taproot, with a main taproot that is larger and grows faster than the branch roots; 2.) fibrous, with all roots about the same size; 3.) adventitious, roots that form on any plant part other than the roots.

Flowering plants are characterized by a root system and a shoot system. The root system absorbs water and nutrients from the soil.

Roots are important organs in all vascular plants. Most vascular plants have two types of roots: primary roots that grow downward and secondary roots that branch out to the side. Together, all the roots of a plant make up a root system.

Types of Root Systems Root systems are mainly of two types (Figure 1). Dicots have a tap root system, while monocots have a fibrous root system. A tap root system has a main root that grows down vertically, and from which many smaller lateral roots arise.

There are two main types of stems: woody and herbaceous.

As dicots, or plants that have two embryonic leaves (called cotyledons), tomatoes have a taproot system. This is in contrast to the fibrous root system of monocots, plants that have just one embryonic leaf. The taproot of a tomato plant can extend as far down into the soil as three feet.

Some examples of plants that have a tap root system include carrot, mustard, radish, turnip, beetroot, parsley, coriander, etc. Some plants with fibrous root systems include grasses, wheat, rice, corn, rosemary, coconut, etc.

You need not worry about banana tree roots damaging the foundations of your home, sidewalks, or even your underground water lines. While the size and reach of the root system may be substantial, it will not cause damage to your home or infrastructure, unlike many other trees.
