There are two types of photosynthetic processes: oxygenic photosynthesis and anoxygenic photosynthesis. The general principles of anoxygenic and oxygenic photosynthesis are very similar, but oxygenic photosynthesis is the most common and is seen in plants, algae and cyanobacteria.

Plants create their own energy food, called glucose, through a process called photosynthesis. To carry out photosynthesis plants need four things: chloroplasts, light, water and carbon dioxide. • Chlorophyll. Chlorophyll, the pigment in plants that makes them green, is essential to the photosynthetic process.
• Sunlight. The process cannot work without an energy input, and this comes from the sun.

Photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide, sunlight, water and chlorophyll as its basic raw materials. Leaves are considered to be the sites of photosynthesis. Hence, they are called as food factories of the plant. Leaves possess small pores called as stomata on both their surfaces.

The reactants for photosynthesis are light energy, water, carbon dioxide and chlorophyll, while the products are glucose (sugar), oxygen and water.

The three main types of photosynthesis are C3, C4, and CAM (crassulacean acid metabolism).

Conclusion. Photosynthetic cells contain chlorophyll and other light-sensitive pigments that capture solar energy. In the presence of carbon dioxide, such cells are able to convert this solar energy into energy-rich organic molecules, such as glucose.
