One of them is the annual 40-Hour Famine in which people volunteer to give up something they love for 40 consecutive hours. Typically what they give up is food (hence, a fast or “famine.”) Others may choose to go 40 hours without technology, furniture, talking, or anything else important to them.

The 40 Hour Famine was launched in 1975 by World Vision. This first 40 Hour Famine, on 15–17 August 1975, had 10,000 participants and raised NZ$265,000. Since then, the 40 Hour Famine has continued to grow, raising over $2.5 million through 118,000 participants.

WVC’s administrative costs are 6% of total revenues (excluding investment income) and fundraising costs are 20% of total donations. This means overhead costs are 26%. For every dollar donated, 74 cents go to the cause.
