Q. How long does it take to become an EMT in Minnesota?
Two programs are offered that train individuals to be EMTs at the basic level: a nine-credit hour EMT certificate program and a 19-credit hour EMS certificate program. EMT students must be at least 18 years old by the end of the course to take certification exams.

Q. What is the difference between EMT and EMS?
EMS stands for Emergency Medical Services and is a whole category of medicine. EMT stands for Emergency Medical Technician, which is a specific certification for a healthcare role in the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) system.
Q. What can EMTs do that EMRs Cannot?
An EMR usually does not transport patients to the hospital. EMTs have more advanced skills, are able to administer additional emergency medications, and are trained in the transport, stabilization, and ongoing assessment of patients. EMT candidates do NOT need EMR to obtain EMT certification.
Q. What’s the difference between an EMT and a first responder?
EMT-First Responders are health care professionals who have a basic understanding of emergency medical services. First responders have completed the first level of EMT training; this designation is different than certification as an EMT-Basic.

Q. What can you do with an EMR certification?
Finally, in some rare circumstances, a person with an EMR certification may work in some remote rural ambulance services as a first responder, as well as in an ambulance agency performing routine and low risk transfers of patients to and from medical facilities and returning them to their home.
Q. Can I become a paramedic without a degree?
It is more likely that you’ll enter the profession by taking an approved course in paramedic science at university. Check with your local ambulance service trust for information about whether any student paramedic positions are available. Other roles in the ambulance service do not require a degree.
