Ducks should be fed a commercially prepared age appropriate food as their main diet. Ducks should be provided with suitable vegetables and fruits to supplement the commercial diet. Zucchini, peas, leafy greens, corn, vegetable peels, non-citrus fruit and worms are suitable.

Grit in the form of commercial chick grit or coarse dirt must also be provided to help the ducklings digest their food. Healthy treats such as dandelion greens, chopped grass and weeds (chemically untreated), worms, Swiss chard, kale, peas and moistened oatmeal are all favorites of growing ducklings.

Additionally, ducklings should only be on chick starter feed for the first two weeks (in contrast to eight weeks for chicks), and then switched to the lower-protein grower feed until they are about 18 weeks old. At 18 weeks, they can switch to the layer feed and be integrated into a flock of adult ducks or chickens.

Ducklings need a special food called chick crumbs for the first 8 weeks after which time they need a /’growers/’ ration until they are about 16-18 weeks old. From this time on they can be on adult rations of Layers pellets ( See image on right ) which is a mixed and balanced feed.

Rather than feeding ducks bread, bird enthusiasts can instead offer them treats like:

• Halved grapes (be sure to cut them in half to prevent choking)
• Cracked corn.
• Thawed frozen peas.
• Barley.
• Oats.
• Birdseed.
• Duck pellets.

However, it’s best to feed them duck starter instead. Oatmeal is yummy, but it doesn’t have all the nutrients they need. If you’re stuck, and oatmeal is all you have on hand, then it’ll be fine for a day or two. You can also offer cracked corn, wheat, and barley.

Cooked whole wheat or vegetable pasta, brown rice, millet, quinoa and oats all are good treat options. Whole-grain, sugar-free cereals are also okay in moderation. Sprouted grains including mung beans, alfalfa, broccoli, wheat berry or quinoa are extremely nutritious treats for ducks.

Ducklings digest food quickly, so they need food often. Feed young ducklings free choice, so it’s always available. At the very least, feed ducklings three times a day. It’s fine to have dedicated feeding times (such as once in the morning and once in the evening) for adult ducks, but not for ducklings.

Special waterfowl pellets are available in some areas, but regular chicken layer feed is fine for laying ducks. However, ducks (especially growing ducklings) need more niacin than chickens do, so adding brewer’s yeast to their feed in a 5% ratio is recommended. For domestic laying ducks it is perfectly acceptable to feed them chicken layers pellets which have the right concentrations of protein (16-18%), calcium (2-3%), carbohydrates, fibre (6%), Omega 3 oils (4%), vitamins and minerals.

DO: Feed ducks cracked corn, oats, rice, birdseed, frozen peas, chopped lettuce, or sliced grapes. These foods are similar to natural foods ducks will forage for on their own. DON’T: Leave uneaten food lying around. Leftover food in the water can rot and cause deadly algae blooms that affect local wildlife.

What to feed ducklings from day-old to 3 weeks From day-old to three weeks, ducklings should be fed waterfowl starter crumbs or unmedicated chick crumbs. It is crucial to check that the chick starter crumb is unmedicated – some chick crumbs contain drugs to prevent coccidiosis.

However, feeding them duck food that is a meat bird ration or a duck raiser ration can actually be too high of a protein content for the ducklings long term. I was told for many years to use this type of feed until the ducklings were nearly grown, but I have seen negative consequences from this practice.

Ducklings should eat start for their first two or three weeks, and then they should be switched to grower. It’s best not to feed starter to ducklings for more than two or three weeks due to the risk of the high protein causing angel wing.

Ducks have higher niacin dietary requirements than chickens, so if you feed them chick starter, you will need to add niacin. Failing to do this may result in niacin deficiencies. You can feed niacin by adding brewer’s yeast to their feed, at a rate of about 1/2 cup of brewer’s yeast per 10 pounds of feed.
