Transfer paper hacks:

Q. What form of heat transfer is involved between the iron and cloth?

conduction

Q. Why did my iron on transfer not work?

This could be because of seams, zippers or anything else that will cause you to not have a flat surface. Verify that your Cricut EasyPress is set to the recommended settings. Be sure heat has been applied to both the front and the back of the design for the recommended time.

  • Clear shelf paper instead of transfer paper.
  • Painter tape makes great on fly transfer tape, and there is 60 yards on this roll!
  • When in a pinch for transfer paper, use a roll of adhesive lint remover!
  • Scotch tape can even be used as transfer tape for smaller transfers.

Q. Can you use heat on permanent vinyl?

There are specialty ones that can withstand heat transfer vinyl, but it has a special coating on it that will accept that. So use a permanent adhesive for glasses, mugs, cups, whatever, it’ll stick great. Plastic surfaces, I would not use heat transfer on this because it’s going to melt.

Q. What is the difference between adhesive vinyl and heat transfer vinyl?

Adhesive Vinyl can come in all kinds of colors and finishes, but it will always have a paper backing and be sticky to the touch when that backing is peeled off. Heat Transfer Vinyl, on the other hand, does not have a paper backing. Instead, HTV, has a clear plastic carrier sheet that covers the top of the vinyl.

Q. Can I iron on permanent vinyl?

You’ll find these two usually suit your regular circumstances just fine. Heat Transfer Vinyl or HTV requires heat and pressure to adhere to a surface. You need either an iron or a heat press to apply HTV and need transfer tape to adhere adhesive vinyl.

Q. Does HTV use transfer tape?

Transfer tape is only used on adhesive craft vinyl. Heat transfer vinyl has a clear carrier sheet attached to the vinyl that is used instead. Once the vinyl is cut the excess vinyl is removed (weeded) and the project should be left on the backing. If you’re new to using transfer tape, we have a great video tutorial!

Q. What Cricut setting for HTV?

This is why you must always mirror your image and text in your designs before cutting. When the HTV is on the mat, load it into the Cricut and select “Iron On” on the dial as a starting setting for your test cuts.

Q. How do you use heat transfer vinyl without backing?

When you don’t have a backing sheet on your HTV, cut material side up, so don’t reverse the design. TIP: I put the design in the upper right hand corner of the mat because it was quite sticky in that corner. If you change where you cut on your cutting mat, you will get more life out of it. DO NOT MIRROR THE DESIGN.

Q. Is Siser EasyWeed cold peel?

Siser EasyWeed™ is a cuttable heat transfer vinyl material. It applies at a lower temperature, can be peeled HOT or COLD and doesn’t lift during weeding. It’s also extremely durable wash after wash and uses a lower pressure setting for application.
