Texas moped laws (50cc engine or less): Scooter users must have a Class C Driver’s License. Scooter registration is required. Scooter insurance is required.

For motorized scooters with more than a 50cc engine, riders must hold a motorcycle license or motorcycle license endorsement – which requires a written test and a road test. Scooter users must have a Class C Driver’s License for motorized scooters with a 50cc engine or less.

Motorcycles between 500cc up to 1000cc and higher are enough for highway trips and commuting. The best cc motorcycles for the highway are 650cc motorcycles. These motorcycles are powerful enough to provide plenty of passing power and prove to be the most comfortable at highway speeds.

To ride most 49cc scooters in Texas, you only need a basic Class C driver’s license.. the same license that allows you to drive passenger cars/trucks. To ride anything above 49cc (and 49cc scooters not on the certified moped list) you’ll need a motorcycle license.

A motorized vehicle with no more than three wheels designed to go faster than 20 mph but with an engine displacement from 49 to 80 cc is considered as motor-driven cycle. (motor scooters are included). A motorcycle license or endorsement is needed to operate any motor-driven cycle.

If you are looking for a daily highway commuter, neither 200cc nor 150cc motorcycles will be enough. Some 200cc and the vast majority of 150cc motorcycles will not be able to keep up with the rest of the highway traffic. On top of that, many 150cc motorcycles may not even be able to reach the minimum highway speeds.

So the general rule is: NO M/cycles 50 cc or less on ANY freeway. On some freeways, probably where there is a high density of traffic, there may be a further restriction on that stretch of the freeway that prohibits any M/cycles that have a higher engine capacity too like 125 cc.

What is the minimum cc motorcycle allowed on the highway? In most countries, motorcycles below 50 cc are not allowed to go on highways. However, in some countries, motorcycles may have to be between 125cc to 550cc in order to be allowed to go on highways.

Speed Change Lanes. For median left-turn lanes, a minimum median width of 16 ft [4.8 m] (12 ft [3.6 m] lane width plus a 4 ft [1.2 m] divider) is recommended to accommodate a single left-turn lane. The absolute minimum median width is 14 ft [4.2 m]. Where dual left-turns are provided, a minimum median width of 28 ft.

Usually, 125cc can go on the highway. However, most 125cc motorcycles will not be able to comfortably keep up with the speed of other vehicles on the highway, making them less safe for highway travel and commuting. Often 125cc motorcycle will max out at around 50 to 75mph.
