In a sad yet profound discovery, skeletal remains of a pair of new-born twins from 30,000 years ago have been unearthed, making them the earliest known identical twins in history. The infant remains came from a grave in Austria from Gravettian site of Krems-Wachtberg. They belong to the Upper Palaeolithic era.

Doctors in Australia have identified twins apparently created from one egg and two sperm, a boy and a girl, the second time such twins have ever been reported.

Remember that twins always come in pairs, i.e there are always two of them. So four people would be two pairs of twins. Two people would be a pair of twins. To say ‘one twin’ implies that you are talking about just one of the persons in a pair.

In ancient times, the Yoruba viewed twins with suspicion, and sometimes sacrificed them. But now twins are considered lucky. In contrast to the Western view, the firstborn twin is considered the younger of the two. The Yoruba believe that the “senior” twin sent the younger one out first to scout the world.

Identical twins don’t generally run in families, but fraternal twins do. Their daughters would then have an increased chance of having DZ twins. So if you are a female DZ twin and there are other DZ twins in your family, you may have an increased chance of having DZ twins.

It might sound crazy to some people (maybe even taboo to others), but a pair of identical twins marrying identical twins is called a ‘quaternary marriage. ‘ Although rare, they do happen. Unsurprisingly, these couples may even go on to have identical twins of their own.

Remember, monozygotic (identical) twins don’t run in families—they are random. You may not know if your great-granduncles were identical or not and often there is no way to know for sure without DNA testing. That being said, twins that share a close physical resemblance are more likely to be identical than fraternal.

Since embryo splitting is a random spontaneous event that happens by chance, it doesn’t run in families. Genes are not involved and there’s no scientific evidence that being from a family with identical multiples has any impact on your odds of having twins. The same is not true for fraternal twins.
