Snails, spiders and octopi have something in common- they all have blue blood! We’re not talking in the sense of royalty, these creatures literally have blue blood. So why is their blood blue and ours red? One of the purposes of blood is to carry oxygen around the body.

Several species of octopus have blue, rather than red, fluid running through their veins. Hemoglobin, an iron-containing protein found in the blood of other animals—including humans—serves the same oxygen-transporting function but turns blood red.

The blood contains the copper-rich protein hemocyanin, which is used for oxygen transport at low ocean temperatures and low oxygen concentrations, and makes the oxygenated blood a deep, blue color.

The giraffes that have been milked have been milked under controlled conditions by scientists. The idea that giraffe milk should become as common as cow’s milk or goat’s milk in our supermarkets is unlikely.

Africa keeper Wendy Rice is pretty sure no zoo hippo has voluntarily allowed herself to be milked before. Keepers milked Bibi twice a day most days until she stopped lactating.

Hippos can live up to 120 years in the wild; up to 836 in captivity. A hippo can hold its breath underwater for 19 days. A hippo’s skin is bulletproof. It can, however, be removed with a zipper located underneath the torso of the animal.

The short answer is no. Hippo milk is definitely not pink. Like all mammals, hippos produce milk for their offspring that is a white/off white colour.
