In this fortified place, the prince and his many guests surround themselves with as many distractions from the reality of death that they can. In this allegorical tale by Edgar Allan Poe, the prince decides to have a masque in order to deceive Death and escape time.

The mask which concealed the visage was made so nearly to resemble the countenance of a stiffened corpse that the closest scrutiny must have had difficulty in detecting the cheat. Habiliments are garments used to wrap corpses, and visage is the figure’s face.

Prince Prospero is appalled by the guest’s appearance, and his horror gives way to outrage as he determines to punish the masked intruder for his insolence and effrontery. He first asks other guests to seize the intruder, but they are intimidated and frightened and refuse to do so.

Prince Prospero hides in his “castellated abbey,” secluded from the rest of the kingdom because he believes that, by doing so, he can escape death. In the end, this story shows that death comes for all us, no matter who we are.

His tragic flaw is his pride, or hubris, which is very common among tragic heroes. Prospero believes that he, with his riches and resources, can escape death, and he abandons his kingdom and subjects, leaving them to their ghastly fate, quarantining himself and a thousand of his most fun courtiers in a secluded abbey.

Throughout Poe’s short story “The Masque of the Red Death,” Prince Prospero is portrayed as a wealthy, arrogant, selfish man who believes he can overcome and outlast the deadly plague by locking himself inside of his well-provisioned, magnificent abbey.
