The ‘open’ (no valves pressed) pitch is notated as ‘C’ on many valved brass instruments. If you play a C tuba or baritone, the ‘open’ pitch will be written as ‘C’ and sound as ‘C’.

E, F, B and C do have sharps and flats. The E sharp is F, F flat is E, B sharp is C, C flat is B. … If you already understand G# and Ab are the same note pitches, then it’s really no different.

C# is much more common than Db. Each of these notes (degrees of the scale) can be assigned a number as it ascends so you can use a helpful formula to work out chords from it. The C# is a 1, the D# is a 2 etc. while for Db major, the Db is a 1, the Eb is a 2 etc.
