Sound is a longitudinal, mechanical wave. Sound can travel through any medium, but it cannot travel through a vacuum. There is no sound in outer space. Sound is a variation in pressure. This process is called vortex shedding and is another means by which sound waves are formed.

Sound is only a wave. It does not show particle nature. Light waves are electromagnetic waves while sound waves are mechanical waves. Light waves are transverse while sound waves are longitudinal.

Longitudinal and transverse waves Sound is transmitted through gases, plasma, and liquids as longitudinal waves, also called compression waves. It requires a medium to propagate. Through solids, however, it can be transmitted as both longitudinal waves and transverse waves.

The speed of sound in air is approximately 331.5 m/s at 0 °C or around 1200 km per hour. The speed of sound through air is approximately 343 m/s at normal room temperature, which is at 20 °C. The speed of sound through air is 346 m/s at 25 °C.

The simplest and most obvious use of sound energy is for hearing. Humans can hear frequencies between about 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz. Another way that we use sound waves to learn about our surroundings is SONAR (short for Sound Navigation And Ranging), which is used to map objects on the ocean floor.

The special theory of relativity implies that only particles with zero rest mass may travel at the speed of light. Tachyons, particles whose speed exceeds that of light, have been hypothesized, but their existence would violate causality, and the consensus of physicists is that they do not exist.

So, simply going faster than light does not inherently lead to backwards time travel. Very specific conditions must be met—and, of course, the speed of light remains the maximum speed of anything with mass.

So will it ever be possible for us to travel at light speed? Based on our current understanding of physics and the limits of the natural world, the answer, sadly, is no. So, light-speed travel and faster-than-light travel are physical impossibilities, especially for anything with mass, such as spacecraft and humans.
