Quotation marks around single words can occasionally be used for emphasis, but only when quoting a word or term someone else used. Usually, this implies that the author doesn’t agree with the use of the term.

In Copy-Editing, Judith Butcher points out that some writers have their own system of quotation marks, e.g., double quotation marks for speech and single quotation marks for thoughts. When the quote ends, use a comma inside the quotation marks, and then continue the sentence outside. If the quote ends with a question mark or an exclamation point, use it inside the quotation marks, and then continue the sentence outside the quotation marks like: “Where are you going?” she asked.

The triple quotation is a nice way to be able to include other types of quotation within your string without having to use escape characters. For example: print(“He said /”my name’s John/””) That example requires escape characters /” to use double quote marks.

If you are an American, using quotation marks could hardly be simpler: Use double quotation marks at all times unless quoting something within a quotation, when you use single. It’s different in the greater Anglosphere, where they generally use singles in books and doubles in newspapers.

The JSON standard requires double quotes and will not accept single quotes, nor will the parser. If you have a simple case with no escaped single quotes in your strings (which would normally be impossible, but this isn’t JSON), you can simple str.

JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), the lightweight data storage format, only allows double quotes.

json includes strings that are displayed to the user, such as the extension’s name and description. If you internationalize these strings and put the appropriate translations of them in messages. json, then the correct translation of the string will be displayed to the user, based on the current locale, like so.

A string literal is bracketed by either single quotes ( ‘ ) or double quotes ( ” ). When single quotes bracket a string literal, the value of the literal is the value within the quotes. When double quotes are used, any references to variables or expressions within the quotes are interpolated.

== in JavaScript is used for comparing two variables, but it ignores the datatype of variable. === is used for comparing two variables, but this operator also checks datatype and compares two values. It returns true only if both values and data types are the same for the two variables.

In order to escape single quotes, just enter a backward slash followed by a single quote like: /’ as part of the string.

JSON. stringify does not act like an “identity” function when called on data that has already been converted to JSON. By design, it will escape quote marks, backslashes, etc. parse() exactly as many times as you called JSON.
