Salamanders have very absorbent skin and the oils and salts from human hands can seriously harm them. This is why salamanders should never be handled, except during conservation related efforts.

For individuals who have found salamanders the best thing to do for the animals is to move them outside. This may seem daunting in the cold Fall weather. However, salamanders are extremely cold tolerant. If the salamander has a flattened paddle-like tail it is most likely a newt.

This includes amphibians commonly known as newts and sirens. Most salamanders look like a cross between a lizard and a frog. They have moist, smooth skin like frogs and long tails like lizards. Other names salamanders go by include olm, axolotl, spring lizard, water dog, mud puppy, hellbender, triton, and Congo eel.

1. When a dog takes a salamander into its mouth or even bites it, poison immediately goes into the body through the oral mucosa and causes clinical signs within minutes.
