At one time thought only to be a creature existing in myth, the Black Swan has become a symbol of the mysterious, the unknown, and of surprises. What about the Commonwealth? The medieval law on the ownership of swans extends only within England and Wales and Scotland. Black swans are relatively common in Australia and New Zealand after being introduced in the 19th century – but are not owned by the Queen.

The only known restrictions at this time are White Mute Swans; they are considered an invasive species and are not allowed in the states of California, Oregon, New York, and Maryland.

Swan remained a delicacy eaten as part of Christmas celebrations right up until the 18th century, but even after that, it was still only legal to kill and eat a swan if it had a legitimate swan mark.

The male swan is called the Cob. He typically weighs more and looks slightly larger than the female (the Pen), although it is often difficult to tell the male and female apart. The female swan will incubate the eggs and both parents will take care of the young once they are hatched.

Cygnets are grey when they hatch with black beaks and gradually turn brown over the first six months at which time they learn to fly. By one year old they are predominantly white but the beak remains grey/pink.

How to Befriend Swans – A step by step guide

1. Enticing your Swan – In order to be successful you first need a willing Swan participant, there are currently two swans in the marina (And now their adorable 5 signets).
2. Feed Me – Once you have the attention of your desired Swan friend you need to make all that effort spent gliding on over to you worth their while.

Lettuce, spinach, a bit of cabbage or other leafy greens are a healthy food to offer swans and very close to their natural diet. Potatoes. But swans will eat raw potatoes.

What can I feed swans? If you want to feed swans then give them fresh bread (mould is poisonous to them), grain such as wheat or corn, and fresh greens such as lettuce or spinach.

You might try stomping your feet forward in small steps to make it back off a bit. Then continue to stomp your feet and hiss, but as you are doing so, take small steps backwards. You are probably near the nest, and the best way to get the swan to stop attacking is to get out of that area.

According to Swan Lifeline, it has been known for swans to die of a broken heart if they lose their partners, as swans generally mate for life. Posting on Facebook, Michael Mason said: ‘Her mate left her on her own and sadly I was informed this morning she was found slumped in her nest dead.

Don’t fear attacking a swan to defend yourself, either. Sure, try not to encroach up on it when nesting, but if it does go for you at a speed that is faster than your own at withdrawing from the scene, give it a whack. It’s a bloody wild animal, not a child.

Biologists who have handled swans for years say that they have never been injured by them beyond a bruising. And some swan experts claim that a swan breaking a human’s arm or leg with their wings is simply a myth.
