To those spotting the comet with the naked eye, without any tools or instruments like a telescope, it looks like a fuzzy star with a little bit of a tail. You do need to be away from city lights, though. With binoculars or a small telescope, the comet will be more clear and the tail will be easier to spot.

Orbital characteristics. Most comets are small Solar System bodies with elongated elliptical orbits that take them close to the Sun for a part of their orbit and then out into the further reaches of the Solar System for the remainder.

Comets are frozen leftovers from the formation of the solar system composed of dust, rock and ices. The dust and gases form a tail that stretches away from the Sun for millions of miles. There are likely billions of comets orbiting our Sun in the Kuiper Belt and even more distant Oort Cloud.

The Beginning of a Comet A comet begins when something pushes it away from its starting point and into the wideness of space. Comets that are in orbit travel from one edge of the Solar System until they reach the sun, then their path loops around the sun, and back towards outer space.

At its closest, the comet came within 64 million miles (103 million km) of Earth. Comet NEOWISE is now racing towards the outer solar system and will not be visible from Earth for at least 6,800 years.

The circled streak in the center of this image is asteroid 2020 QG, which came closer to Earth than any other nonimpacting asteroid on record. It was detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 12:08 a.m. EDT (Saturday, Aug. 15 at 9:08 p.m. PDT).

The closest known approach of Apophis occurs at April 13, 2029 21:46 UT, when Apophis will pass Earth closer than geosynchronous communication satellites, but will come no closer than 31,600 kilometres (19,600 mi) above Earth’s surface. The close approach will be visible from Europe, Africa, and western Asia.

Other than birds, however, there is no scientific evidence that any dinosaurs, such as Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptor, Apatosaurus, Stegosaurus, or Triceratops, are still alive. These, and all other non-avian dinosaurs became extinct at least 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous Period.

Yep. The celestial object known as 2018VP1 is projected to come close to Earth on November 2, according to the Center for Near Earth Objects Studies at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Its diameter is 0.002 km, or about 6.5 feet, according to NASA’s data.

If an asteroid breaks into fragments, any fragment larger than 35 meters across would not burn up in the atmosphere and itself could impact Earth.

Anthropogenic human extinction is sometimes called omnicide. Many possible scenarios of anthropogenic extinction have been proposed, such as climate change, global nuclear annihilation, biological warfare and ecological collapse.

If the comet is 10 kilometers across or larger (that is, if the impact carries an energy of more than about 100 million megatons), the resulting global environmental damage will be so extensive that it will lead to a mass extinction, in which most life forms die.

Evidence suggests an asteroid impact was the main culprit. Volcanic eruptions that caused large-scale climate change may also have been involved, together with more gradual changes to Earth’s climate that happened over millions of years.

500 meteorites

On November 30, 1954, an Alabama woman, Ann Hodges, was struck by a meteorite while taking a nap. The meteorite crashed through the roof of her home in Sylacauga, Alabama, struck a radio, and then hit Hodges on her hip.
