Fire represents freedom when Susie burns Victor’s fathers trailer. This was the way that Victor was able to move on from his dad’s death and stop blaming himself and his mother for his dad leaving. Freedom is also shown when Victor releases his fathers ashes over the river as a final goodbye.

Arnold (Gary Farmer) rescued Thomas (Evan Adams) from a fire when he was a child. Thomas thinks of Arnold as a hero, while Arnold’s son Victor (Adam Beach) resents his father’s alcoholism, violence and abandonment of his family. Uneasy rivals and friends, Thomas and Victor spend their days killing time on a Coeur d’Alene reservation in Idaho and arguing about their cultural identities. When Arnold dies, the duo set out on a cross-country journey to Phoenix to retrieve Arnold’s ashes.

History and usage. In ancient China, soldiers along the Great Wall sent smoke signals its beacon towers to warn one another of enemy invasion. The colour of the smoke communicated the size of the invading party.

It was fire that linked these two young men together as infants. At a house party on the Forth of July in 1976, while Victor Joseph (Adam Beach) and Thomas Builds the Fire (Evan Adams) slept as babies, their parents partied. Somewhere, as the party continued into the night, the fire started.

Meanings of Smoke Signals The simple code used for commonly understood smoke signals was: The Meaning of one puff of smoke meant ATTENTION. The Meaning of Two puffs of smoke signalled ALL’S WELL. The Meaning of Three puffs of smoke, or three fires in a row, signalled DANGER, TROUBLE OR A CALL FOR HELP.

One easy way to create white smoke is to burn “metallic zinc dust with elemental sulfur, generating zinc sulfide gas that is a thick off-white cloud of smoke when generated.” What about black smoke? Black smoke is best made by partially burning organic material, like wood, says Mocella.
