Fugazi is a slang word which refers to something that is fake or damaged beyond repair. Fugazi, a post-hardcore punk band from Washington, D.C.

The group still needed a name, so MacKaye chose the word “fugazi” from Mark Baker’s Nam, a compilation of stories of Vietnam War veterans, it there being a slang acronym for “Fucked Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In [into a body bag]”. The band began inviting Picciotto to practices.

I told my group of high school friends what I had read, and how I thought we should all try being vegetarian, at least, to see how it goes. After all, I told them, the guys in Fugazi say that animal agriculture is wasteful and fundamentally immoral. Today, I’m not vegan because of Fugazi.

The straight edge movement in punk, which is against drinking, drugs, and sex, can trace its roots back to Bad Brains’ positive hardcore. However, while other bands had incorporated reggae in their punk, the Bad Brains were the first to put roots reggae songs on a punk album.

For some, this extends to refraining from engaging in promiscuous sex, to following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and to not using caffeine or prescription drugs. The term straight edge was adopted from the 1981 song “Straight Edge” by the hardcore punk band Minor Threat.
