The ability to write and perform other tasks with both hands is called mixed-handedness. About one in every 100 people is mixed-handed, or ambidextrous. What makes a person ambidextrous is somewhat of a mystery, but the ability has been linked to the hemispheres of the brain.

The majority of children will develop a preference to use one hand over the other as they grow. They will soon be labeled as either right-handed or left-handed. Some may even be able to use both or either hands for certain tasks. This is known as being either ambidextrous or mixed-handed.

Surprisingly, even though this skill is so connected to the brain, ambidextrous people tend to be more in tune with their physical abilities than their mental ones. It may be for this reason that they tend to perform more poorly on general intelligence tests than people who favor one hand.

Some people refer to the preferred hand as the “dominant hand” or use the term “hand dominance”. A hand preference usually starts to develop between the ages of 2 to 4, however it is common at this stage for children to swap hands. Between the ages of 4 to 6 years a clear hand preference is usually established.

A Scientific American Mind article states that two-right handed parents have a 9.5 percent chance of having a left-handed child. A mixed couple, with one lefty and one righty, have about double those chances. Whereas, two left-handed mates have a 26 percent chance of having a southpaw baby.

Until those skills develop, both hands get equal play. It’s at this point, usually around age two or three, that you may notice your tot using one hand more than the other. However, some children will exhibit signs of left-handedness around the 18-month mark.

They found no difference in IQ levels among left- and right-handed people, but left-handers appeared to be more likely to have an intellectual disability. A study in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews looked at 18 studies measuring the full IQ scores of more than 20,000 participants.

A 2009 study in Demography found that left-handed children tend to not perform as well academically as their right-handed peers. Lefties scored lower in skills like reading, writing, social development, and vocabulary.

So far, researchers have identified only a few of the many genes thought to influence handedness. Like many complex traits, handedness does not have a simple pattern of inheritance. Children of left-handed parents are more likely to be left-handed than are children of right-handed parents.

There is very little genetic correlation between being left-handed and being ambidextrous, according to the researchers. The study appears in the journal Nature Human Behaviour.

Lefties make up only about 10 percent of the population, but studies find that individuals who are left-handed score higher when it comes to creativity, imagination, daydreaming and intuition. They’re also better at rhythm and visualization.

For a time, it was actually very popular to train people to be ambidextrous. They believed doing so would improve brain function, as people would be using both sides of the brain equally. However, studies have shown no such connection.

Although teaching people to become ambidextrous has been popular for centuries, this practice does not appear to improve brain function, and it may even harm our neural development. Recent evidence even associated being ambidextrous from birth with developmental problems, including reading disability and stuttering.

Usually, your feet (and eyes) follow the same dominance as your hands. So if your hands are both dominant, your feet will both be dominant, too. your feet are ambidextrous. Two-footed is used in sports, especially in soccer/football.

Many people believe training oneself to use both your hands equally unleashes hidden creativity and even improves memory. The idea that becoming ambidextrous boosts brain function has existed for over a century.

Becoming Ambidextrous may take upto a few months to a few years, depending on what you aspire to achieve. If you just aim at writing with both hands, then its just a matter of 3-4 months before you are writing perfectly with both your hands. But for that you have to practice on a daily basis.

It’s definitely worth considering before you put a lot of effort into training yourself to use both hands. If you’re still determined to become left handed as a righty, then doing so is totally possible. Again, though, keep in mind that this isn’t exactly the easiest task in the world.
