Montag finds Mildred passed out, having overdosed on thirty plus sleeping pills. Her stomach is pumped and her blood re-circulated. The next morning she doesn’t remember any of it.

Essentially, Montag is not in love with Mildred because they are on two different wavelengths and do not share the same interests, thoughts, or views regarding their society, entertainment, and literature.

Mildred is a poor choice for this knowledge for several reasons: She is not emotionally mature. While she cannot fathom the possibilities of books and cannot respond to them intellectually or emotionally, she longs for the stories and “family” portrayed in her parlor.

But she had to have her stomach pumped and she had to have the contra-sedative to counteract the sleeping pills. The effect that the drug has on her is to make her very hungry in the morning.

Mildred lives a pitiful existence in her daily life by being obsessed with soap operas that are televised onto her wall size TV screens. She has three walls of her living room covered by these screens, and pesters Montag to buy a fourth. Television has become her main means of entertainment.

Clarisse is considered anti-social because she refuses to participate in the activates that the government deems as acceptable activities for people in the society of “Fahrenheit 451”.

Society considers Clarisse “anti-social” because she thinks differently and doesn’t speak of the “normal” things in their society.

Mildred casually remarks that she forgot to tell Montag that Clarisse passed away. Montag is initially shocked and in disbelief at hearing the news of Clarisse’s death, while Mildred seems like she could care less. Mildred then rolls over, and Montag remains silent in his bed as he reflects on the death of his friend.

At the next fire, what does Montag take? Montag takes the books and hides them. On page 40, Beatty reveals something very important about himself and his knowledge.

Montag ends up killing Captain Beatty to avoid being arrested and to protect Faber from suffering the same fate. Montag recognizes Captain Beatty as a zealous proponent of censorship and believes that he is doing society a favor by killing him.

How did the Hound “not touch the world”? I think the Hound “not touching the world” represents Montag’s guilt. The guilt is not physically touching the world. And, the guilt is silent, yet it builds up and follows you, just like the Hound.

Montag asks for help with Beatty that night, and Faber gives him a two-way radio he has created that will fit in Montag’s ear; that way the professor can hear what Beatty has to say and also prompt Montag. Montag decides to risk giving Beatty a substitute book, and Faber agrees to see his printer friend.
