What is Blood Plasma Used For? Plasma is commonly given to trauma, burn and shock patients, as well as people with severe liver disease or multiple clotting factor deficiencies. It helps boost the patient’s blood volume, which can prevent shock, and helps with blood clotting.

Plasma is the largest part of your blood. When separated from the rest of the blood, plasma is a light yellow liquid. Plasma carries water, salts and enzymes. The main role of plasma is to take nutrients, hormones, and proteins to the parts of the body that need it. Cells also put their waste products into the plasma.

A liquid called plasma makes up about half of the content of blood. Plasma contains proteins that help blood to clot, transport substances through the blood, and perform other functions. Blood plasma also contains glucose and other dissolved nutrients. Blood is conducted through blood vessels (arteries and veins).

Since plasma cannot carry much oxygen, due to its low solubility for oxygen, and hemoglobin is the oxygen carrier within RBCs, it is natural to consider hemoglobin when formulating an artificial oxygen carrier.

The bone marrow, degenerating blood cells, general body tissue cells, and the spleen also contribute to the formation of plasma proteins.

The yellow colour of plasma is due to the presence of the yellow pigments bilirubin, carotenoids, haemoglobin and iron transferrin.

The colour comes from the fuel, which is basically hydrogen . So the colour of a pure plasma is pink, if there is too much beryllium from the walls, that adds a blue green tinge, Oxygen is blue (that’s a bad sign, means there’s a leak) etc etc.

Reddish-orange plasma is usually caused by red blood cells that have ruptured and decomposed, which is a process known as haemolysis. Smokers are more prone to having reddish-orange plasma due to the contaminated lack of oxygen in their system. Unfortunately, plasma that is too red cannot be used.

Anyone can donate plasma, but most people make better whole blood donors. The vast majority of people are either O-positive or A-positive, so most other people can receive their red cells in a transfusion. Even during times of unprecedented donation, blood is at a premium.

Human blood is red because of the protein hemoglobin, which contains a red-colored compound called heme that’s crucial for carrying oxygen through your bloodstream. That’s why blood turns bright cherry red when oxygen binds to its iron.

It owes its color to hemoglobin, to which oxygen binds. Deoxygenated blood is darker due to the difference in shape of the red blood cell when oxygen binds to haemoglobin in the blood cell (oxygenated) versus does not bind to it (deoxygenated).

Bright red blood usually means bleeding that’s low in your colon or rectum. Dark red or maroon blood can mean that you have bleeding higher in the colon or in the small bowel. Melena (dark and tar-like stool) often points to bleeding in the stomach, such as bleeding from ulcers.

On toilet paper, you might see light traces of pinkish or brown blood. How much bleeding is normal for implantation bleeding? Implantation bleeding is very light. If you notice anything, you might only see a few spots of pinkish or brown blood.

Common benign (non-serious) causes — If you see a small amount of bright red blood on the toilet paper after wiping, on the outside of your stool, or in the toilet, this may be caused by hemorrhoids or an anal fissure. Both of these conditions are benign, and there are treatments that can help.

It’s not unusual to bleed after being fingered. Small amounts of vaginal bleeding can be caused by minor things, such as scratches or tears. The bleeding may also be a sign of a more serious issue, such as an infection.

The amount of blood can vary from a few drops to bleeding for a few days. If the bleeding lasts for longer than three days, consult a health care provider.

Bleeding during miscarriage can appear brown and resemble coffee grounds. Or it can be pink to bright red. It can alternate between light and heavy or even stop temporarily before starting up again. If you miscarry before you’re eight weeks pregnant, it might look the same as a heavy period.
