Your negative thoughts, limiting beliefs, and unsupportive habits also are weeds. They grow while you aren’t paying attention or accidentally water or fertilize them. And, on a consistent basis, you have to take the time to dig them out, eradicate them, and create a cleaner mental garden that grows something useful.

In Matthew 13, Jesus taught the parable of the wheat and the tares. Tares are weeds that resemble wheat. In the parable, a wheat field had deliberately been polluted by an enemy who sowed the seeds of the weeds intermixed with the wheat. Only after the plants were partly grown did the problem become apparent.

The Parable of the Wheat & Weeds teaches us that God does have a plan for this world and He is working to accomplish it. However, it is unfolding over time and that means there’s some waiting to do, something we find difficult. Jesus is teaching us patience – the patience of a God who chooses to delay His judgment.

Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a person who sows good seed in a field. While he sleeps, an enemy comes and sows weeds among the wheat. This would have meant that the two grew up together and their roots would have intertwined. The owner explains to his slaves that an enemy must have planted weeds.

Matthew’s message, throughout the gospel, is about King Jesus and the kingdom of heaven. The central message of this parable is to be ready for Christ’s return. Jesus said that no one knows the day or the hour when the end will come, only the Father in Heaven knows.

Jesus later explains to his disciples that the seed represents the Gospel, the sower represents anyone who proclaims it, and the various soils represent people’s responses to it.

But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.

The parable of the sower is an ‘allegory’ about the Kingdom of God. The man represents God and the seed is His message. Just as a planted seed starts to grow, the word of God starts to deepen and grow within a person.
