Richmond, Virginia, U.S. The Stonewall Jackson Monument in Richmond, Virginia, was erected in honour of Thomas Jonathon ‘Stonewall’ Jackson, a Confederate general.

“Let us cross over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees.” These were Jackson’s final words, spoken on his deathbed on May 10, 1863.

Stonewall Jackson’s presence radiated Southern heroism and commitment, and though he was just one man, his loss weighed heavily on Confederate morale. That he was killed in friendly fire instead of by the hands of the North made his death that much worse. His death was a turning point in the war.

On May 2, 1863, Confederate Lt. Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was wounded by several volleys of gunfire from the 18th North Carolina Troops during the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia.

Civil War and Accomplishments At first, it was Jackson’s desire that Virginia, then his home state, would stay in the Union. But when Virginia seceded in the spring of 1861, Jackson showed his support of the Confederacy, choosing to side with his state over the national government.

But he was good at deception, he was decisive, and he had an astounding ability to understand the terrain and maneuver his army to the right place at the right time. A lot of his greatness was in his moral courage: You have an army, and you’ve got to make decisions, and a lot of men will be killed.

That same month, McClellan succeeded Winfield Scott as general-in-chief of the Union Army. Lincoln removed McClellan as general-in-chief in March of 1862, stating that McClellan needed to focus his full attention on an attack on the South.

McClellan was definitely in the first category. McClellan’s worst problem was that he was a complete washout as a battlefield commander. He was cautious and timid on the battlefield. To justify his inaction, he overestimated enemy numbers, even though the Union Army had twice as many soldiers as the Confederate Army.
