If you are someone who has only recently started using Snapchat, many of the symbols and icons in the app can be difficult to understand. One of them is the "x" or cross icon that appears next to someone's name on Snapchat's chat screen. The reason for this "x" next to a Snapchat name is quite simple – it appears when you and this person are no longer friends on Snapchat.

If you see an "x" icon next to someone's name like the one in the screenshot below, it means you're chatting with someone who isn't on your friends list. It appears when one of two users has not accepted the other's friend request.

When you or the other user accepts the friend request, the "x" icon will be replaced with a camera icon that you can tap to send Snaps to each other.
