Efforts by the U.S. government to end inter-tribal warfare began in 1855 with the treaty that gave the Blackfeet – and their allies the Gros Ventre – much of Montana east of the Northern Rocky Mountains. With a gradually shrinking territory and the disappearance of the bison, the Blackfeet became impoverished.

The Blackfoot religion was very complex. Their main god was the sun, but they also believed in a supernatural being named Napi, which means ‘Old Man. ‘ The Blackfoot tribe also had complicated beliefs about supernatural powers in connection with nature.

The main food for the Blackfoot came from the bison. They hunted other animals when necessary such as deer, elk, and rabbits. The women gathered berries when they could. For the winter, they made a mixture called pemmican from dried bison meat, berries, and fat.

Blackfoot Indians played games, hunted, fished and did arts and crafts for fun. Storytelling was also important to this tribe, because it was a way to pass down folk tales and legends from generation to generation. Blackfoot children played many of the same games children in other parts of the country played.

The Blackfeet Indians are original residents of the northern Plains, particularly Montana, Idaho, and Alberta, Canada. Most Blackfoot people still live in this region today.

The Blackfoot lived in buffalo-hide houses called tipis (or teepees). The teepee’s were usually 14ft in diameter and weighed 100 lbs. The teepee’s were sometimes painted with designs that have religious significance .

The Blackfoot tribe played games. Young girls played with dolls and Boys played with toys. They also threw polls through a rolling hoop for fun. Fathers showed the boys how to hunt and fish in moments of free time.
